INSEAD MBA Essay Questions for January 2014 and September 2014. Here I discuss INSEAD’s essays for January 2014 (Class of meaning December 2014) and September 2014 (Class of July 2015) . In 2011, INSEAD changed the essays for the first time in many years. The deadlines for September 2014 and January 2014, can be found here. For information about INSEAD interviews, please see here. PLEASE NOTE: According to INSEAD’s website, there will be new essay questions for Class of 2015 admissions. As of January 11, 2014, those questions were not yet up on their website. Since 2001, when I began doing MBA admissions counselling, I have had an opportunity to work with a large number of candide clients admitted to INSEAD. Since establishing my own consulting practice in 2007, I’ve worked with 22 clients admitted to INSEAD. Annual breakdowns and meaning, testimonials from Essay about Tobacco clients admitted to INSEAD can be found here. My report on my 2011 visit to the Singapore campus is here.
The INSEAD application requires no resume, so providing as complete an answer to all application form questions is especially important. A core substitute for the resume are the job related essays, which give applicants an opportunity to explain and analyze their professional experience. As the questions are concerned with the applicant’s professional experience, I think the meaning following from my interview with Deborah Riger, who was the voltaire INSEAD MBA Programme’s Assistant Director of Marketing at meaning, the time of the interview should be kept in mind: “ADAM: Regarding professional experience, what to do you look for in younger (very early twenties) and older (late twenties or thirties) applicants? DEBORAH: For all applicants we want to imperialism, see a track record of toko professional accomplishments that sets them apart from their peers. For those with only 1-2 years of professional experience, they must demonstrate something distinctive in their profile, perhaps they have started their own company. I would suggest, it is in hinduism and buddhism agree, the benefit of all younger applicants to work for a minimum of toko two years before applying to business school as they will get more out importance of art in school of the toko programme if they have experiences to reflect back on. For older applicants, we are looking for of Japan Empire, a strong professional track record and clear goals toward career change or advancement. If an older applicant has been in the same role for five years that might not demonstrate potential for growth, overall ambition or success relative to his/her peers.” Based on my experience with INSEAD applicants, the above statement from Deborah is completely accurate.
INSEAD is relatively forgiving of those with limited (1-2 years) of toko professional experience as long as there is something distinctive about dionne, their background, but for most applicants, INSEAD is expecting to toko meaning, see a clear pattern of career growth. While INSEAD can actually be quite flexible about the level of quintuplets dionne international experience that an applicant has, when it comes to those with 3-10+ years of experience, career growth really matters. Deborah’s comment about meaning, applicants in the same position for five years is also really telling as it points to the fact that INSEAD is looking for applicants who are not complacent. Keep in of art, mind that an INSEAD admission committee consists of faculty and alumni and the later, in particular, are likely to have clear expectations of what good career growth looks like. I think it is also important to keep in mind that a business background is not a necessity for admission to toko, INSEAD, but that good professional experience is.
See here . Of Art In School. Based on toko, my experience working with clients coming from a variety of professions, I can say that having a non-business, but solid professional career, can be a real advantage. As I already mentioned, keep in mind that INSEAD does not require a CV or resume. Therefore these job essays below are critical pieces of the application. As you will see, the INSEAD application has relatively limited space to discuss your past experience in typical resume style. You should consider that these essays will really provide INSEAD with their primary interpretation of your career. 1. Mexico. Briefly summarise your current (or most recent) job, including the nature of toko meaning work, major responsibilities, and, where relevant, employees under your supervision, size of budget, clients/ products and results achieved. (250 words maximum) This is voltaire, a very straightforward question for most applicants. Toko Meaning. For those who are unemployed, you should write about your last position held. You want to Military of Japan, focus on meaning, both major responsibilities and major results. Military Of Japan Empire. Since results (accomplishments) are likely to be specifically connected to toko meaning, responsibilities, I would prioritize them in your description. I think for many applicants, the easiest way to organize this essay will be in terms of discussing their 2-4 most important results and/or responsibilities.
Here is Health and Environmental of Smoking, one possible organizational scheme. 1. Brief introduction indicating the nature of the position and toko meaning, employer. 50 words. 2. Most important responsibility that lead to a result. 50-100 words. 3-5. Subsequent responsibilities-results.
25-75 words. The Details: If you don’t have employees working during under your supervision, you should still indicate any project-based and/or team-based leadership. As with a resume or CV include any numbers that will help INSEAD understand the extent of your results or responsibilities. Military Essay. Even approximate quantification is meaning, better than no quantification if it helps to mexico, positively showcase your career. Keep in mind that in this essay you should be focused on your job, not on your personality. Interpret your job, don’t just summarize it. Explain why the meaning work you do is hinduism and buddhism that, significant.
2. Please give us a full description of your career since graduating from toko meaning university. If you were to remain with your present employer, what would be your next step in terms of position? (250 words) This essay should be a growth story. Importance. If it is not a story that shows how your career has positively evolved, it is unlikely to meaning, be very effective. You might be unemployed at the moment, but what has been the trajectory so far? Did you take a big risk along the way? Point that out. We each have our career ups and downs, especially anyone who has taken risks.
Don’t shy away from discussing the risks, but the dionne overall focus of toko this essay should be positive. In my experience, INSEAD rewards those who take risks and does not look kindly on those that stay in the same position for five years or more. Change or become boring! If you have been working in the same position for five years or more, you will need to really show how you have demonstrated growth in terms of results or responsibilities, which would have been primarily discussed in Job Essay 1. In terms of organizing this essay, think about the key turning points in Military Essay, your career. Meaning. Help INSEAD understand how you have evolved professionally. Assume that you are being judged critically and consider how to both effectively and honestly present your career. The final part of voltaire this question is what I would call an “opportunity cost” question, in meaning, other words, by going to INSEAD, you will be sacrificing the opportunity to take the next step at your current employer. If you are unemployed, the imperialism way to handle this question is to toko meaning, discuss the Power of Japan Empire kind of position you would obtain if you were not seeking an MBA.
For everyone else, I think you should be realistic, but also present the best possible version of meaning your next position, which will show that you are seeking an MBA to hinduism agree, move beyond what would follow without it. A bad answer to this question would involve identifying a next step that is the same as the short term goal you discuss later in Essay 4 because this would undermine much of the value of toko meaning obtaining an MBA. About Dangers. I think INSEAD asks this question not only to determine whether you have a clear sense of your career trajectory, but also to confirm that you have thought deeply about what you are sacrificing by toko pursuing an MBA. Given the need to analyze your entire career development, for most applicants, I would suggest providing a brief (50 words or less) answer to this part of the imperialism question. 3. If you are currently not working, what are you doing and what do you plan to do until you start the MBA programme? (250 words maximum) This is the only completely new question on toko, the INSEAD application. It is a good addition as there was no place other than optional essay for applicants who are not working to mexico imperialism, discuss their situation. I think it is critical to provide a honest answer to the question and one that hopefully shows that you are using your time well. Possible topics to discuss:
1. Learning activities (NOT APPLICATION PREP PLEASE! That would be really weak) 2. Language learning. 4. Meaning. Volunteer activities. The word counts are now listed with maximums.
This a change from quintuplets prior years were approximate counts were given. 1. Meaning. Give a candid description of yourself, stressing the personal characteristics you feel to be your strengths and weaknesses and the main factors, which have influenced your personal development, giving examples when necessary. (600 words maximum) With a question like this I think it is important to understand that you are actually being asked to think about your strengths and weaknesses in terms of your overall personality and development. Essay About Health And Environmental Dangers Tobacco. What is meaning, important here is provide both an analysis about specific characteristics of yourself and to help admissions understand who you are. Imperialism. YOU NEED TO TELL A COMPELLING STORY ABOUT WHO YOU ARE AS A PERSON! I put this in uppercase because I get far too many essays from my clients that end up focusing on toko meaning, professional content, that don’t focus on hinduism that, personality and personal background, or are otherwise not really effective portraits. Think of this essay as a highly focused portrait of yourself that will give admissions great insight into your life story and your characteristics (strengths and weaknesses).
The most effective answers here consistently combine revealing parts of the applicant’s personality and background while discussing strengths and toko meaning, weaknesses. Obviously the strengths and weaknesses should be ones that relate to Military Power of Japan Empire, your character, not to a skill set. Given the word count, I suggest focusing on meaning, no more than about two strengths and two weaknesses. I would try to give fairly equal consideration to both weaknesses and strengths. I find that many applicants resist writing about agree that, their own weaknesses, yet to do so reveals self-awareness and maturity. Toko Meaning. While I think it is necessary to practice good judgment when writing about weakness, I think it is also important that you provide something beyond the routine. One standard defensive strategy that many applicants seem drawn to importance, is to write about knowledge or skill areas where they are weak, but this is not suitable for toko, INSEAD’s question because they want you to stress personal characteristics.
Compared to weaknesses, strengths are easier for most people to write about. Given the limited space here, you might find it helpful to write about a strength here that is discussed in greater detail in another essay. In other words, you might discuss the origins of dionne one your key strengths and toko, trace its connection to hinduism and buddhism agree, your personal or professional accomplishments. IS IT A GOOD STRENGTH OR WEAKNESS? Some questions to ask yourself: 1. Does the meaning strength demonstrate one’s potential for future academic and/or professional success? If so it is a probably a good topic. If not, why does INSEAD need to importance of art in school, know about it? 2. Is a weakness fixable? If you are writing about a weakness that cannot be improved upon through your program at INSEAD, why do they need to know about toko, it?
3. Is your strength or weakness being stated without any context or very context and not supported by other essays in your application? If so, you really need to provide enough support for that, the strength or weakness to make it meaningful. Finally, if you are having difficulty thinking about your strengths and weaknesses in relation to your future academic and professional goals, please see my analysis of Essay 4 because in it I discuss how to meaning, think about strengths and quintuplets, weaknesses in relation to goals. 2. Describe what you believe to be your two most substantial accomplishments (if possible specify one personal and one professional, to date, explaining why you view them as such. (400 words maximum) Since INSEAD is now asking that, if possible, you make one of toko your accomplishments one personal and one professional, I strongly advise that you do that. Some key things to keep in and buddhism agree, mind when answering this question: -Accomplishments reveal your potential to succeed at INSEAD and meaning, afterwords. -Accomplishments reveal your potential for contributing to of Japan, your classmates. -Everyone has had accomplishments, so it is easy to compare applicants. -What you consider to be an accomplishment are real tests of toko meaning your self-awareness and judgment. The following grid is the kind I have used successfully with applicants preparing this question: (CLICK TO ENLARGE. Hinduism And Buddhism Agree That. ) How to use this grid for toko meaning, outlining your answer to Question 1. Row 1: “Stories.”The first thing you need to do is think of the accomplishments. These will eventually take the form of stories, so that is what I call them.
A few things to Essay Health Tobacco, keep in mind: Your accomplishments maybe personal, professional, or academic. While it is very important that your accomplishments be distinct so as to reveal different things about you, there is no single formula for what their content must be. It is meaning, quite possible that you might have three professional accomplishments or one personal/one professional/one academic or two academic/one personal. It will really depend on your background. The key consideration is Essay Health of Smoking, that each accomplishment must be substantial and that you can explain why that is the case. Row 2: “What skill, value, or unique experience is being showcased?” Your accomplishments need to toko meaning, reveal valuable things about mexico imperialism, you. Some will call these selling points, but more specifically they consist of skills, values, or unique experiences. One might use a specific accomplishment to meaning, emphasize one’s leadership skills, another to show one’s ethical values, and another to explain a significant barrier that was overcome. The point is Military of Japan Empire Essay, that each accomplishment must at its core reveal something key to understanding who you are.
Row 3: “What potential for success in the MBA program or afterwords is demonstrated?” You may or may not be directly stating this in the essay, but you should think about what each accomplishment reveals in toko meaning, terms of your potential. INSEAD Admisisons will most certainly be considering how your accomplishments demonstrate your potential to imperialism, succeed at INSEAD and afterwords, so you should as well. One key way of thinking about the MBA application process is to see it as a test of potential. Potential itself can mean different things at different schools and so you must keep in mind differences between schools and in particular must pay close attention to what schools say really matters when they assess applicants. Toko. Please click here to read about what INSEAD values in applicants. Please keep in mind that a core part of your own application strategy should be determining which parts of you to emphasize both overall and for a particular school. Row 4: “Will this be a contribution to others in the MBA program? How?” Just as with potential, think about voltaire, whether your accomplishments demonstrate your ability to add value to other students at INSEAD. Given space limitations, it is not likely that you will be explaining how one or more of your accomplishments will be contribution, but rather this is a strategic consideration. The dynamic nature of study groups at INSEAD is very much based on what each student contributes. Think about whether any of your accomplishments demonstrate how you will likely add value to other students INSEAD experience.
Not all substantial accomplishments will have this quality, but many will. Row 5: “Why does Adcom need to know about this?” If your accomplishment has made it this far, chances are it is substantial. That said, I have two simple tests for determining whether an accomplishment really belongs in this essay. The first is whether INSEAD really needs to know about this accomplishment. After all, you might consider getting the love of your life to marry you to be one of your most substantial accomplishments, but will Adcom care? If an toko meaning accomplishment does not reveal (whether stated or implied) potential and/or contribution, chances are likely that it is not significant enough. Row 6: “Is this something Adcom could learn about you elsewhere? (If “YES,” find another accomplishment)” The second and hinduism, final simple test I have for determining whether an accomplishment really belongs in meaning, this essay is importance of art in school, based on toko, the idea that something that is totally obvious about mexico, you to toko meaning, anyone looking at your resume and transcript is Military of Japan Empire, probably not worth mentioning.
If you were a CPA, having an accomplishment that merely demonstrated you were good at accounting would not be worth writing about. Meaning. Instead it would be important to show something more specific that reveals something that is Essay about Health and Environmental of Smoking, not obvious by toko meaning a mere examination of the basic facts of your application. Finally, as I mentioned above what you include here is a real test of your judgment, so don’t just write about your obvious accomplishments. Think deeply and come up with a set of importance of art in school unique accomplishments that reveal distinct, interesting, and the most important things about you that will compel admissions to want to interview you. 3. Describe a situation taken from your personal or professional life where you failed. Toko Meaning. Discuss what you learned (400 words maximum) This is a fairly standard failure question.
It is important to remember that you might very well succeed from the perspective of others, but fail from your own perspective. It is critical that you learned something meaningful about yourself. The basic components of an answer: 1. Clearly state what the failure was. 2. Clearly state your role.
3. Clearly state the result. 4. Importance Of Art In School. Explain the meaning effect in terms of what you learned and perhaps also how you applied what you learned. If possible, show how you applied what you learned to Essay Health Tobacco, a new situation because the application of toko abstract learning to Power of Japan Essay, a new situation is a key indicator of real learning. 4. Meaning. a) Discuss your short and of art in school, long term career goals. (300 words maximum) and b) How will studying at INSEAD help you achieve your vision? (250 words maximum) THESE ARE FUTURE DIRECTED QUESTIONS Unlike some other “Why MBA” questions, INSEAD is meaning, not asking about the Essay and Environmental Dangers of Smoking Tobacco past. You will write about that in toko, the other essays. Instead focus on your goals and the skills that you will obtain at INSEAD that will help you accomplish those goals. You must offer both a short term-plan and long-term vision for your intended future. Given the dionne short length of the INSEAD program, it really is quite important that you give them a clear future post-MBA plan. a) Discuss your short and meaning, long term career goals. (300 words maximum) Given the hinduism agree that intensive nature of the INSEAD experience, you need to go into the program with a clear idea of what you want to do after your MBA.
Of course, this might change, but given the program length and the reality that you will need to toko meaning, begin recruiting/internship hunting soon after entry, you will need a clear plan for quintuplets dionne, your future. If you are having difficulty articulating such a plan, y ou can use my GAP, SWOT, AND ROI TABLE FOR FORMULATING GRADUATE DEGREE GOALS for this purpose (see below). I think Gap , SWOT , and ROI analysis are great ways for understanding what your goals are, why you want a degree, and meaning, how you will use it. (To best view the following table, click on it. ) How to use this table: Step 1. Begin by imperialism analyzing your “Present Situation.” What job(s) have you held? What was/is your functional role(s)? What was/are your responsibilities? Next, analyze your present strengths and weaknesses for meaning, succeeding in quintuplets, your present career. Toko. REMEMBER: WHEN YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESS DON’T ONLY THINK ABOUT WORK, THINK ABOUT OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE. Essay About Dangers Tobacco. In particular, some of your greatest strengths may have been demonstrated outside of work, so make sure you are accounting for meaning, them. Strengths: What are you good at?
Where do you add value? What are you praised for? What are you proud of? Weakness: What are you bad at? What are you criticized for? What do you try to about Health and Environmental Dangers of Smoking, avoid due to your own limitations? What do you fear? Next, analyze the environment you work in right now. What opportunities exist for your growth and success? What threats could limit your career growth?
Step 2. Toko Meaning. Now, do the same thing in Step 1 for your “Post-Degree” future after you have earned your graduate degree. IF YOU CANNOT COMPLETE STEP 2, YOU HAVE NOT SUFFICIENTLY PLANNED FOR YOUR FUTURE and therefore you need to do more research and need to think more about it. Step 3. If you could complete step 2, than you should see the “Gap” between your present and your future. What skills, knowledge, and other resources do you need to close the gap between your present and future responsibilities, strengths, and opportunities? Step 4. After completing Step 3, you now need to determine how an MBA will add value to you.
It is possible that an increased salary as a result of job change will be sufficient “ROI” for the degree to justify itself, but you should show how a degree will allow you to reach your career goals. How will the Essay Health Dangers degree enhance your skills and opportunities and meaning, help you overcome your weaknesses and external threats? If you can complete Step 4, then you should be ready to explain what your goals are, why you want a degree, and the relationship between your past and hinduism and buddhism agree, future career, as well as your strengths and weaknesses. If you know about INSEAD, you are ready to write about toko meaning, your goals, whether in Question 3-4 or elsewhere in importance of art in school, the essay set. The above table will also help you answer such common interview questions as: Where do you want to toko, work after you finish your degree? Why do you want an MBA (or other degree)?
What are you strengths? What are your weaknesses? What are your goals? b) How will studying at INSEAD help you achieve your vision? (250 words maximum) As with other schools, I strongly recommend becoming informed about imperialism, INSEAD. Toko. Attending admission events, meeting alum, and Power Empire, making full use of meaning INSEAD’s online resources is critical for making the Health strongest possible case for why your goals require an toko meaning INSEAD education. Dionne. You should most certainly look at INSEAD KNOWLEDGE and listen to meaning, some INSEAD Knowledgecasts . Finally, keep in mind that INSEAD is a fun school, so express your personality in terms of why you want to quintuplets, attend it. I would also suggest joining https://www.facebook.com/insead and https://www.facebook.com/INSEAD.Degree.Programmes for the latest INSEAD news. While you should be explaining why you need an MBA, you need to make sure that your reasons align well with INSEAD. You need not mention the names of particular courses as long as it would be clear to your reader that your learning needs align well with INSEAD’s offerings. For example, it is toko, really a waste of word count to mention the names of particular finance courses if the main point you are simply trying to make is quintuplets dionne, that you want to enhance your finance skills.
Every admissions members at INSEAD is well aware of the programs major offerings. If you have a particular interest in a more specialized course or studying with a particular professor, it might be worth mentioning it as long as it is an explanation of why you want to study the subject and not based on meaning, circular reasoning. An example of circular (tautological) reasoning: ”I want to take Capital Markets Investments because I am interested in learning about hinduism, capital market investing.” This kind of circular reasoning is so common. Usually it takes place within a paragraph consisting of many such sentences. They actually convey nothing about the applicant. Meaning. They are just abstract needs and will have limited impact on your reader. Importance. The admissions reader wants to learn about you, not about their own program. An example of an explanation for why : ”While I have been exposed to finance through my work at toko, MegaBank of Joy, I presently lack the kind of comprehensive understanding of capital market investing that I will need to Essay and Environmental Dangers of Smoking, succeed as an investment analyst and toko, I know I can gain at INSEAD.” A more complete explanation would include additional details about the kind of issues that the applicant is interested in learning about and/or specific ways the applicant intended to apply what he or she would learn at INSEAD. By focusing on very specific learning needs and explaining those needs in relationship to one’s goals and/or past experience, the admissions reader will be learning about you.
5. Please choose one of the following two essay topics: a) Have you ever experienced culture shock? What insights did you gain? (250 words maximum), or b) Describe the ways in candide, which a foreigner in meaning, your country might experience culture shock (250 words maximum) a) Have you ever experienced culture shock? What insights did you gain? This is a very standard question that frequently gets asked in interviews and Empire, has appeared on a number of MBA applications. It is also a question with significant room for saying something stupid and potentially fatal to toko, your application. Some topics to avoid:
1. Topics where you negatively stereotype another nation: Martians are argumentative, so I was surprised to learn that some of them are not. 2. Topics where you are the Empire Essay victim: The Martians lied to me and as a result I lost the contract to a local provider. 3. Topics where you don’t actually learn anything: This situation taught me the importance of human communication. Successful versions of this topic almost always involve real learning. Meaning. I suppose it is possible for Essay Health and Environmental of Smoking Tobacco, something to mean much to toko meaning, you without learning something important, but I can’t recall a successful version of this essay that did that.
After all to be shocked is to experience something outside of quintuplets dionne your previous understanding. Getting shocked teaches something important that changes your perspective. This may lead to a new career decision, a new way of looking at meaning, oneself, a new way of interacting with other people, or a myriad of other possibilities. b) Describe the ways in which a foreigner in your country might experience culture shock. American Adam’s bad answer: “Those traveling to America might be shocked by the need to tip.” Why is Essay about Health and Environmental Dangers, that answer bad? It certainly is useful to know how to toko, tip. I can think of almost nothing more annoying in Power of Japan Empire Essay, the US than our system of tipping and how it would be a bit of a culture shock to toko, someone not used to doing it.
Doesn’t this make for a good topic? NO, BECAUSE IT IS OBVIOUS, IS COVERED IN EVERY TRAVEL GUIDE, AND WOULD GIVE ADMISSIONS NO REAL INSIGHT INTO YOUR ABILITY TO HAVE INTERESTING AND USEFUL THINGS TO SAY ABOUT MY OWN COUNTRY. Uppercase is of art in school, used here in the hope that I don’t have to read another version of this essay where the writer says commonplace things about their own country that any tourist would know and probably would not be shocked by. If you write on option b), think deeply about how your knowledge of your country will contribute to your fellow classmates at INSEAD. INSEAD is a place were students really have the option of toko meaning getting to know (and drink with) people from all over the world. Imperialism. It is truly international in a way that no American program could ever claim. This question directly relates to your own self-consciousness about what is different about your country. They will, to some extent, depend on you for their knowledge of your home country.
Don’t tell them the easy stuff they can get by toko meaning flipping through the mexico first few pages of a Lonely Planet travel guide to your country. Give them real insight. The kind of insight they could use if they were going to move there. Now while the question is toko meaning, not in regards to your classmates, I think it is useful to think of mexico imperialism it that way so that you focus on writing something that would actually be interesting and useful to someone who visits your country. You don’t have to write on a business related topic, but if you have a good one, do so.
The following questions should help you: 1. Meaning. What kind of problems have you seen foreigners have when communicating with people in your country? 2. What do people say in your country about foreigners? Do they have a bias against of art, them or even a bias for them? 3. What most annoys you about your own country that would be something that someone coming from meaning outside of quintuplets dionne it is likely to experience? 4. What aspects of your country’s culture seem hard for foreigners to handle (Not just the toko language as that is mexico imperialism, too obvious)? 6. Is there anything that you have not mentioned in the above essays that you would like the toko Admissions Committee to know? (350 words maximum) This essay is optional. While this question is optional, I have every client write about something here. Beyond any explanation for any negative issues, feel free to write about any extracurricular activities, professional experiences, personal experiences, and/or other matters that you can add here to provide another positive perspective about you. This is a completely open question. While you might very well need to tell the Admissions Committee something negative, such as an explanation for a low GPA, I would suggest using at least part of it to tell them something positive about Military Essay, you.
Feel free to write on any topic that will add another dimension to Admissions’ perception of who you are. I would not treat it as optional unless you truly feel that the toko rest of your essays have fully expressed everything you want INSEAD to know about you. I don’t suggest writing about something that would be obvious from reviewing your application, instead tell INSEAD that one or two additional key points that will give them another reason to admit you. 7. In case of Military Empire reapplication, please provide an update on any new aspects of your professional, international, academic or personal profile that would not have been included in your previous application. Please also explain your motivation for toko, re-applying to INSEAD. (400 words maximum) For reapplicants, it is critical that you provide clearly stated updates that show growth since the last application. Voltaire. Whatever form(s) this growth takes, please provide a summary of it here, even if you have addressed the topic elsewhere in the application. In addition, beyond what you write about INSEAD in Essay 4b, please provide a clear explanation of why INSEAD is your first choice.
I think it is especially useful to show what steps you have taken to learn more about the program.

ACT essay scores are inexplicably low, causing uproar among college-bound students. The inside track on Washington politics. *Invalid email address. Toko Meaning! Students work on a practice ACT test in Essay Health Dangers of Smoking Tobacco this 2011 file photo. Meaning! (AP Photo/The Enquirer/Patrick Reddy) Many students are in an uproar over a change to and buddhism agree, the ACT that has yielded what they call inexplicably low scores on the essay section of the nation’s most widely used college admission test. Controversy erupted soon after the ACT introduced a revised essay-writing task in September that is being graded for the first time on the same 36-point scale as the rest of the test. Counselors across the country are complaining that many of their top students, who routinely earn marks higher than 30 on other parts of the ACT, are getting writing scores in the low-to-mid 20s. “I know these kids well,” said Michele Hernandez, a college counselor based in Vermont. “There’s no way they should be getting scores that low on meaning the writing. It’s obviously out of candide, whack.” Some students dissatisfied with their writing scores have discovered a solution: They can pay ACT $50 to re-score their essay. Few take this step, but those who do will get their re-scoring fee refunded if ACT revises the score upward, ACT spokesman Ed Colby said. Toko! One Rhode Island student took the ACT in September, getting a 19 on the writing section and 30s on the rest of the imperialism test. Meaning! “He’s a pretty good writer,” one of this student’s parents said. “I thought the 19 was odd.” The student asked for a re-score and was rewarded with a huge bump, to 31. There was no explanation for what the of art parent called a “very dramatic” change. “I was a little disconcerted.” This parent and some affected students spoke with The Washington Post on condition of anonymity to maintain their privacy in the college application process.
Colby said ACT receives a tiny number of requests for re-scoring — 300 out of nearly 4.3 million tests administered in the last school year. “It’s a very small number of students who use it, and most of toko meaning, them do not receive a score change,” he said. ACT officials acknowledge that essay-writing scores are trending lower than scores in quintuplets dionne English, reading, math and meaning, science, but they say that scores in one subject aren’t meant to be directly comparable to those in another. “We urge students to understand that a particular score on the ACT Writing Test doesn’t mean the same thing as a score on any of the other ACT tests,” Colby said. “And colleges understand this.” The ACT essay is an optional 40-minute writing exercise offered after 2 hours and 55 minutes of multiple-choice assessment in English, reading, math and importance in school, science. Before September, the toko meaning ACT gave students 30 minutes to compose an essay taking a position on Military Power Empire Essay a given issue, with the writing graded on a scale of 2 to 12. The new essay requires students to “develop an argument that puts their own perspective in dialogue with others” in response to a contemporary issue. A sample topic on meaning the ACT website is the in school influence of “intelligent machines.” Many colleges don’t require the essay for students who take the ACT. But a number of selective schools, from Harvard and Princeton to the University of California, do require it.
Typically, more than half of all ACT test-takers answer the essay question. The essay score doesn’t factor into the overall composite score, which is often considered the most crucial takeaway from an admissions test. Toko! One 16-year-old from the suburbs of Chicago said he took the test in October and got a 36 on each of the four required portions of the ACT. Those top marks ordinarily would be cause for Essay Health and Environmental Dangers Tobacco, celebration. But his writing score, he said, was a 23. “I was expecting in the very worst case maybe a high 20 score,” he said. “It really took me aback. Toko Meaning! It bothers me.” A 17-year-old who grew up in Washington, D.C., and attends a New England boarding school said he took the ACT in December, earning a composite score of 31 but a writing score of 23. “I was surprised,” he said. Candide Voltaire! “I consider myself a pretty good writer.” Responding to numerous questions, ACT officials recently published an explanation of their essay scoring. It said that two trained graders read each essay, using a rubric to meaning, assign points in four categories: ideas and importance, analysis; development and support; organization; and language use and conventions. A third reader can step in to settle differences.
The ACT analysis showed that grades varied significantly among the toko five subjects on the overall test. The top 5 percent of students scored 32 or higher in English and reading. That! But they scored 30 or higher in math and science. And their scores were lower still in writing: 27 to 28 or higher. Toko Meaning! Students “are only beginning to get experience with the new writing prompt,” the analysis said. “Research suggests that as students become increasingly familiar with the new prompt, scores may increase and users will better understand the distribution of scores and importance, how they correspond to the percentiles and predicted success in college.” The controversy comes amid flux in the national testing landscape. Toko! The ACT recently overtook the SAT as the nation’s most widely used test, though the SAT remains more popular in the Washington region and many other markets. The College Board is scheduled to debut a new version of its SAT next month, when for the first time since 2005, the imperialism SAT’s essay will be optional and the overall top score will be 1600. Meaning! The College Board overhauled the writing prompt, too, seeking to beef up the analytical task.
How much colleges care about the mexico imperialism ACT essay or the toko meaning SAT essay is an open question. Of Art In School! Of 539 schools that the College Board tracks, 426 will neither require or recommend that students take the toko meaning SAT essay when the new version debuts. Among them are the public flagship universities of Virginia and Maryland, as well as Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania in the Ivy League. Several highly regarded schools, including Columbia, U-Penn. and U-Va., also are dropping ACT essay requirements. U-Md. said its longstanding policy has been to not require the ACT essay. John McLaughlin, an quintuplets associate dean of toko, admissions at U-Penn., said any essay scores that are submitted will get evaluated along with the rest of an application.
He said most admitted students who took the candide voltaire ACT have composite scores of 32 or higher. Meaning! Asked about the flap over the ACT essay and of art, perceived scoring mismatches, he said: “I can understand the toko meaning unease.” But McLaughlin emphasized that admission officers take a student’s entire record into account. “It’s our job to get beyond these numbers.”

essay philosophy Your paper must offer an toko, argument. It can't consist in the mere report of your opinions, nor in a mere report of the opinions of the philosophers we discuss. Power Of Japan? You have to toko meaning defend the claims you make. Quintuplets? You have to toko meaning offer reasons to candide voltaire believe them. So you can't just say: My view is that P. You must say something like: My view is that P. Toko? I believe this because. or: I find that the quintuplets dionne, following considerations. provide a convincing argument for P. Similarly, don't just say: Descartes says that Q. Toko Meaning? Instead, say something like: Descartes says that Q; however, the following thought-experiment will show that Q is not true. or: Descartes says that Q. Power Empire? I find this claim plausible, for the following reasons. There are a variety of things a philosophy paper can aim to toko meaning accomplish. It usually begins by putting some thesis or argument on the table for consideration. Then it goes on to do one or two of the following:
Criticize that argument; or show that certain arguments for the thesis are no good Defend the argument or thesis against someone else's criticism Offer reasons to believe the thesis Offer counter-examples to Essay of Smoking the thesis Contrast the meaning, strengths and weaknesses of two opposing views about the thesis Give examples which help explain the candide voltaire, thesis, or which help to toko make the thesis more plausible Argue that certain philosophers are committed to the thesis by their other views, though they do not come out and explicitly endorse the thesis Discuss what consequences the thesis would have, if it were true Revise the thesis, in dionne, the light of some objection. No matter which of these aims you set for yourself, you have to explicitly present reasons for the claims you make . Students often feel that since it's clear to them that some claim is true, it does not need much argument. But it's very easy to overestimate the strength of your own position. After all, you already accept it. You should assume that your audience does not already accept your position; and you should treat your paper as an attempt to persuade such an audience. Hence, don't start with assumptions which your opponents are sure to reject. If you're to have any chance of persuading people, you have to toko start from common assumptions you all agree to. A good philosophy paper is modest and makes a small point ; but it makes that point clearly and straightforwardly, and it offers good reasons in support of it. People very often attempt to accomplish too much in a philosophy paper.
The usual result of this is a paper that's hard to read, and which is hinduism that, full of inadequately defended and poorly explained claims. So don't be over-ambitious. Don't try to toko establish any earth-shattering conclusions in your 5-6 page paper. Done properly, philosophy moves at a slow pace. The aim of these papers is for you to show that you understand the about of Smoking Tobacco, material and that you're able to think critically about it. To do this, your paper does have to show some independent thinking. That doesn't mean you have to come up with your own theory, or that you have to make a completely original contribution to human thought. There will be plenty of time for that later on. An ideal paper will be clear and straightforward (see below), will be accurate when it attributes views to toko other philosophers (see below), and will contain thoughtful critical responses to the texts we read. It need not always break completely new ground. But you should try to come up with your own arguments, or your own way of in school elaborating or criticizing or defending some argument we looked at in class.
Merely summarizing what others have said won't be enough. It's even more valuable to talk to meaning each other about what you want to argue in your paper. When you have your ideas worked out well enough that you can explain them to someone else, verbally, then you're ready to sit down and mexico imperialism, start making an outline. The overall clarity of your paper will greatly depend on toko, its structure. That is why it is important to think about these questions before you begin to Essay about Dangers Tobacco write.
I strongly recommend that you make an outline of your paper, and of the arguments you'll be presenting, before you begin to write. Meaning? This lets you organize the points you want to make in Military of Japan Empire Essay, your paper and get a sense for toko meaning, how they are going to voltaire fit together. It also helps ensure that you're in a position to toko meaning say what your main argument or criticism is, before you sit down to candide write a full draft of your paper. When students get stuck writing, it's often because they haven't yet figured out what they're trying to say. Give your outline your full attention. It should be fairly detailed. (For a 5-page paper, a suitable outline might take up a full page or even more.) I find that making an toko, outline is at least 80% of the work of writing a good philosophy paper. Mexico? If you have a good outline, the rest of the writing process will go much more smoothly. You need to leave yourself enough time to think about the topic and write a detailed outline. Only then should you sit down to toko write a complete draft. Once you have a complete draft, you should set it aside for candide, a day or two.
Then you should come back to meaning it and rewrite it. Several times. At least 3 or 4. If you can, show it to your friends and get their reactions to it. Do they understand your main point? Are parts of hinduism agree your draft unclear or confusing to them? All of this takes time.
So you should start working on toko meaning, your papers as soon as the dionne, paper topics are assigned. You may think that since your TA and I already know a lot about this subject, you can leave out a lot of basic explanation and write in a super-sophisticated manner, like one expert talking to another. I guarantee you that this will make your paper incomprehensible. If your paper sounds as if it were written for a third-grade audience, then you've probably achieved the right sort of clarity. In your philosophy classes, you will sometimes encounter philosophers whose writing is obscure and complicated. Everybody who reads this writing will find it difficult and toko meaning, frustrating. The authors in question are philosophically important despite their poor writing, not because of it. So do not try to emulate their writing styles. Make the structure of hinduism agree your paper obvious. How can you do this? First of all, use connective words, like: because, since, given this argument thus, therefore, hence, it follows that, consequently nevertheless, however, but in the first case, on the other hand.
These will help your reader keep track of where your discussion is going. Meaning? Be sure you use these words correctly! If you say P. Thus Q. Military Empire? then you are claiming that P is a good reason to accept Q. Meaning? You had better be right. If you aren't, we'll complain. Don't throw in a thus or a therefore to make your train of mexico thought sound better-argued than it really is.
Another way you can help make the structure of your paper obvious is by telling the reader what you've done so far and toko, what you're going to do next. You can say things like: I will begin by. Before I say what is wrong with this argument, I want to. These passages suggest that. I will now defend this claim. Further support for this claim comes from. Essay About Health Dangers Tobacco? For example.
These signposts really make a big difference. Meaning? Consider the following two paper fragments: . We've just seen how X says that P. I will now present two arguments that not-P. My first argument is. My second argument that not-P is. X might respond to my arguments in several ways. Quintuplets Dionne? For instance, he could say that. However this response fails, because. Another way that X might respond to toko meaning my arguments is by claiming that. This response also fails, because. So we have seen that none of X's replies to candide my argument that not-P succeed.
Hence, we should reject X's claim that P. I will argue for the view that Q. There are three reasons to believe Q. Firstly. The strongest objection to Q says. However, this objection does not succeed, for the following reason. Isn't it easy to see what the toko, structure of these papers is? You want it to be just as easy in your own papers. A final thing: make it explicit when you're reporting your own view and when you're reporting the mexico, views of some philosopher you're discussing.
The reader should never be in doubt about whose claims you're presenting in a given paragraph. You can't make the structure of your paper obvious if you don't know what the structure of your paper is, or if your paper has no structure. That's why making an outline is so important. Be concise, but explain yourself fully. These demands might seem to pull in opposite directions. (It's as if the first said Don't talk too much, and meaning, the second said Talk a lot.) If you understand these demands properly, though, you'll see how it's possible to meet them both. We tell you to be concise because we don't want you to hinduism agree ramble on meaning, about everything you know about a given topic, trying to show how learned and in school, intelligent you are. Each assignment describes a specific problem or question, and you should make sure you deal with that particular problem.
Nothing should go into your paper which does not directly address that problem. Prune out everything else. It is always better to concentrate on toko, one or two points and develop them in depth than to try to quintuplets dionne cram in too much. One or two well-mapped paths are better than an impenetrable jungle. Formulate the central problem or question you wish to address at the beginning of your paper, and keep it in mind at all times. Make it clear what the toko, problem is, and why it is a problem. Be sure that everything you write is relevant to that central problem. In addition, be sure to say in that, the paper how it is relevant.
Don't make your reader guess. One thing I mean by explain yourself fully is that, when you have a good point, you shouldn't just toss it off in one sentence. Explain it; give an example; make it clear how the point helps your argument. But explain yourself fully also means to meaning be as clear and explicit as you possibly can when you're writing. It's no good to hinduism and buddhism that protest, after we've graded your paper, I know I said this, but what I meant was. Say exactly what you mean, in toko meaning, the first place. Part of Power of Japan Empire Essay what you're being graded on is how well you can do that. Pretend that your reader has not read the material you're discussing, and has not given the topic much thought in advance. This will of course not be true. But if you write as if it were true, it will force you to meaning explain any technical terms, to illustrate strange or obscure distinctions, and to be as explicit as possible when you summarize what some other philosopher said. Use plenty of examples and candide voltaire, definitions.
Examples are also useful for toko, explaining the notions that play a central role in your argument. You should always make it clear how you understand these notions, even if they are familiar from everyday discourse. As they're used in voltaire, everyday discourse, those notions may not have a sufficiently clear or precise meaning. For instance, suppose you're writing a paper about abortion, and toko, you want to assert the claim A fetus is voltaire, a person. What do you mean by a person?
That will make a big difference to toko meaning whether your audience should find this premise acceptable. It will also make a big difference to mexico imperialism how persuasive the rest of your argument is. By itself, the following argument is pretty worthless: A fetus is a person. It's wrong to kill a person. Therefore, it's wrong to kill a fetus. For we don't know what the author means by calling a fetus a person. Toko? On some interpretations of person, it might be quite obvious that a fetus is a person; but quite controversial whether it's always wrong to kill persons, in that sense of person. On other interpretations, it may be more plausible that it's always wrong to imperialism kill persons, but totally unclear whether a fetus counts as a person.
So everything turns here on what the author means by toko, person. The author should be explicit about hinduism and buddhism agree that, how he is meaning, using this notion. In a philosophy paper, it's okay to Power Essay use words in ways that are somewhat different from the ways they're ordinarily used. You just have to make it clear that you're doing this. For instance, some philosophers use the word person to mean any being which is capable of rational thought and self-awareness. Understood in this way, animals like whales and chimpanzees might very well count as persons. That's not the toko, way we ordinarily use person; ordinarily we'd only call a human being a person. About Health Of Smoking Tobacco? But it's okay to use person in this way if you explicitly say what you mean by it. And likewise for other words. Don't vary your vocabulary just for the sake of toko variety.
If you call something X at the start of your paper, call it X all the way through. So, for instance, don't start talking about Plato's view of the self, and then switch to talking about and buddhism, Plato's view of the meaning, soul, and then switch to talking about Plato's view of the about and Environmental Tobacco, mind. If you mean to be talking about the same thing in all three cases, then call it by the same name. In philosophy, a slight change in vocabulary usually signals that you intend to be speaking about toko, something new. Using words with precise philosophical meanings. Philosophers give many ordinary-sounding words precise technical meanings. Consult the handouts on Philosophical Terms and hinduism and buddhism that, Methods to make sure you're using these words correctly. Don't use words that you don't fully understand.
Use technical philosophical terms only where you need them. Toko Meaning? You don't need to importance of art explain general philosophical terms, like valid argument and necessary truth. But you should explain any technical terms you use which bear on the specific topic you're discussing. So, for instance, if you use any specialized terms like dualism or physicalism or behaviorism, you should explain what these mean. Likewise if you use technical terms like supervenience and the like. Even professional philosophers writing for other professional philosophers need to explain the special technical vocabulary they're using. Meaning? Different people sometimes use this special vocabulary in different ways, so it's important to make sure that you and your readers are all giving these words the same meaning. Pretend that your readers have never heard them before. Presenting and assessing the mexico, views of others. Then ask yourself: Are X's arguments good ones?
Are his assumptions clearly stated? Are they plausible? Are they reasonable starting-points for X's argument, or ought he have provided some independent argument for them? Make sure you understand exactly what the position you're criticizing says. Students waste a lot of toko time arguing against views that sound like, but are really different from, the views they're supposed to be assessing. Remember, philosophy demands a high level of precision. It's not good enough for Military Power Empire, you merely to get the general idea of somebody else's position or argument. Toko? You have to get it exactly right. (In this respect, philosophy is more like a science than the other humanities.) A lot of the quintuplets, work in philosophy is making sure that you've got your opponent's position right. You can assume that your reader is stupid (see above). But don't treat the philosopher or the meaning, views you're discussing as stupid.
If they were stupid, we wouldn't be looking at them. If you can't see anything the view has going for candide voltaire, it, maybe that's because you don't have much experience thinking and toko meaning, arguing about the view, and so you haven't yet fully understood why the voltaire, view's proponents are attracted to it. Try harder to figure out what's motivating them. Philosophers sometimes do say outrageous things, but if the view you're attributing to a philosopher seems to toko be obviously crazy, then you should think hard about whether he really does say what you think he says. Hinduism That? Use your imagination. Try to figure out what reasonable position the philosopher could have had in mind, and direct your arguments against toko meaning, that.
In your paper, you always have to explain what a position says before you criticize it. If you don't explain what you take Philosopher X's view to Health and Environmental Dangers be, your reader cannot judge whether the criticism you offer of X is a good criticism, or whether it is simply based on a misunderstanding or misinterpretation of X's views. So tell the reader what it is you think X is saying. Don't try to meaning tell the importance, reader everything you know about X's views, though. You have to go on to offer your own philosophical contribution, too. Only summarize those parts of X's views that are directly relevant to what you're going to go on to do. Sometimes you'll need to argue for meaning, your interpretation of X's view, by about and Environmental Dangers, citing passages which support your interpretation.
It is permissible for you to discuss a view you think a philosopher might have held, or should have held, though you can't find any direct evidence of that view in the text. When you do this, though, you should explicitly say so. Toko? Say something like: Philosopher X doesn't explicitly say that P, but it seems to me that he's assuming it anyway, because. When a passage from a text is Essay Dangers of Smoking Tobacco, particularly useful in supporting your interpretation of some philosopher's views, it may be helpful to toko quote the hinduism and buddhism agree, passage directly. (Be sure to meaning specify where the passage can be found.) However, direct quotations should be used sparingly. It is about Health Tobacco, seldom necessary to quote more than a few sentences. Often it will be more appropriate to paraphrase what X says, rather than to quote him directly. When you are paraphrasing what somebody else said, be sure to say so. (And here too, cite the pages you're referring to.) Quotations should never be used as a substitute for your own explanation. Meaning? And when you do quote an author, you still have to explain what the Essay about and Environmental of Smoking, quotation says in toko meaning, your own words.
If the quoted passage contains an argument, reconstruct the argument in more explicit, straightforward terms. If the quoted passage contains a central claim or assumption, then indicate what that claim is. You may want to give some examples to Essay about Health and Environmental of Smoking Tobacco illustrate the author's point. If necessary, you may want to distinguish the author's claim from other claims with which it might be confused. Sometimes when students are trying to toko explain a philosopher's view, they'll do it by importance, giving very close paraphrases of the philosopher's own words.
They'll change some words, omit others, but generally stay very close to toko the original text. For instance, Hume begins his Treatise of Human Nature as follows: All the perceptions of the human mind resolve themselves into two distinct kinds, which I shall call impressions and ideas. The difference betwixt these consists in the degrees of dionne force and liveliness, with which they strike upon toko meaning, the mind, and make their way into our thought or consciousness. Voltaire? Those perceptions, which enter with most force and toko, violence, we may name impressions; and under this name I comprehend all our sensations, passions, and emotions, as they make their first appearance in the soul. By ideas I mean the hinduism and buddhism that, faint images of these in thinking and meaning, reasoning. Here's an example of imperialism how you don't want to paraphrase: Hume says all perceptions of the mind are resolved into two kinds, impressions and meaning, ideas. Candide? The difference is in how much force and liveliness they have in our thoughts and consciousness. The perceptions with the most force and violence are impressions. These are sensations, passions, and toko meaning, emotions.
Ideas are the faint images of our thinking and reasoning. There are two main problems with paraphrases of mexico this sort. In the toko, first place, it's done rather mechanically, so it doesn't show that the author understands the text. About Health And Environmental Of Smoking Tobacco? In the second place, since the toko, author hasn't figured out what the text means well enough to quintuplets dionne express it in toko, his own words, there's a danger that his paraphrase may inadvertently change the meaning of the text. Essay? In the example above, Hume says that impressions strike upon the mind with more force and liveliness than ideas do. Meaning? My paraphrase says that impressions have more force and liveliness in our thoughts.
It's not clear whether these are the same thing. In addition, Hume says that ideas are faint images of hinduism agree that impressions ; whereas my paraphrase says that ideas are faint images of toko meaning our thinking . These are not the same. So the importance, author of the paraphrase appears not to have understood what Hume was saying in toko meaning, the original passage. A much better way of explaining what Hume says here would be the that, following: Hume says that there are two kinds of 'perceptions,' or mental states. He calls these impressions and ideas. An impression is a very 'forceful' mental state, like the sensory impression one has when looking at a red apple. An idea is a less 'forceful' mental state, like the idea one has of an apple while just thinking about it, rather than looking at meaning, it. It is not so clear what Hume means here by 'forceful.' He might mean. Don't be afraid of mentioning objections to your own thesis. It is Power of Japan, better to bring up an toko meaning, objection yourself than to hope your reader won't think of it.
Explain how you think these objections can be countered or overcome. Of course, there's often no way to deal with all the objections someone might raise; so concentrate on Essay about Dangers of Smoking Tobacco, the ones that seem strongest or most pressing. So it's OK to ask questions and raise problems in toko meaning, your paper even if you cannot provide satisfying answers to of art in school them all. You can leave some questions unanswered at the end of the paper. Toko? But make it clear to the reader that you're leaving such questions unanswered on candide voltaire, purpose . And you should say something about how the question might be answered, and about what makes the question interesting and relevant to meaning the issue at hand. If something in Military Power of Japan Empire, a view you're examining is unclear to you, don't gloss it over. Call attention to the unclarity. Suggest several different ways of meaning understanding the view. Voltaire? Explain why it's not clear which of these interpretations is correct.
If you're assessing two positions and you find, after careful examination, that you can't decide between them, that's okay. It's perfectly okay to toko say that their strengths and weaknesses seem to be roughly equally balanced. But note that this too is a claim that requires explanation and reasoned defense, just like any other. You should try to provide reasons for this claim that might be found convincing by someone who didn't already think that the two views were equally balanced. Sometimes as you're writing, you'll find that your arguments aren't as good as you initially thought them to be. You may come up with some objection to your view to which you have no good answer. Quintuplets Dionne? Don't panic. If there's some problem with your argument which you can't fix, try to toko meaning figure out why you can't fix it. It's okay to of Japan Empire change your thesis to one you can defend. For example, instead of writing a paper which provides a totally solid defense of meaning view P, you can instead change tactics and write a paper which goes like this: One philosophical view says that P. This is a plausible view, for the following reasons.
However, there are some reasons to be doubtful whether P. Candide Voltaire? One of these reasons is X. X poses a problem for the view that P because. It is not clear how the meaning, defender of P can overcome this objection. Or you can write a paper which goes: One argument for P is the 'Conjunction Argument,' which goes as follows. At first glance, this is a very appealing argument. However, this argument is candide voltaire, faulty, for the following reasons. One might try to repair the toko, argument, by. But these repairs will not work, because. I conclude that the Conjunction Argument does not in fact succeed in establishing P. Writing a paper of of art these sorts doesn't mean you've given in to toko meaning the opposition.
After all, neither of these papers commits you to the view that not-P. They're just honest accounts of how difficult it is to find a conclusive argument for P. P might still be true, for all that. Then come back to the draft and re-read it. As you read each sentence, say things like this to mexico imperialism yourself: Does this really make sense? That's totally unclear! That sounds pretentious. What does that mean? What's the connection between these two sentences? Am I just repeating myself here? and so on.
Make sure every sentence in your draft does useful work. Get rid of any which don't. If you can't figure out what some sentence contributes to your central discussion, then get rid of it. Even if it sounds nice. You should never introduce any points in your paper unless they're important to your main argument, and you have the room to really explain them. If you're not happy with some sentence in meaning, your draft, ask yourself why it bothers you. It could be you don't really understand what you're trying to say, or you don't really believe it.
Make sure your sentences say exactly what you want them to say. For example, suppose you write Abortion is the same thing as murder. Is that what you really mean? So when Oswald murdered Kennedy, was that the same thing as aborting Kennedy? Or do you mean something different?
Perhaps you mean that abortion is candide voltaire, a form of murder. In conversation, you can expect that people will figure out what you mean. But you shouldn't write this way. Even if your TA is toko, able to figure out what you mean, it's bad writing. In philosophical prose, you have to be sure to say exactly what you mean. Also pay attention to the structure of your draft. When you're revising a draft, it's much more important to work on the draft's structure and overall clarity, than it is to clean up a word or a phrase here or there.
Make sure your reader knows what your main claim is, and what your arguments for that claim are. Make sure that your reader can tell what the importance of art in school, point of every paragraph is. It's not enough that you know what their point is. It has to meaning be obvious to your reader, even to a lazy, stupid, and mean reader. If you can, show your draft to mexico imperialism your friends or to other students in meaning, the class, and get their comments and advice. I encourage you to do this. Do your friends understand your main point? Are parts of your draft unclear or confusing to Military Power of Japan Empire Essay them? If your friends can't understand something you've written, then neither will your grader be able to toko meaning understand it. Your paragraphs and your argument may be perfectly clear to you but not make any sense at all to someone else.
Another good way to hinduism check your draft is to read it out loud. This will help you tell whether it all makes sense. Toko? You may know what you want to say, but that might not be what you've really written. Reading the paper out loud can help you notice holes in your reasoning, digressions, and unclear prose. You should count on Essay Health and Environmental, writing many drafts of toko meaning your paper. At least 3 or 4!! Check out the following web site, which illustrates how to revise a short philosophy paper through several drafts.
Notice how much the paper improves with each revision: Writing tutor for Introductory Philosophy Courses http://web.williams.edu/wp-etc/philosophy/jcruz/jcruz/writingtutor/. Also, don't begin with a sentence like Webster's Dictionary defines a soul as. Dictionaries aren't good philosophical authorities. They record the way words are used in everyday discourse. Importance Of Art In School? Many of the toko, same words have different, specialized meanings in philosophy. It's OK to end a sentence with a preposition. It's also OK to split an infinitive, if you need to. (Sometimes the easiest way to imperialism say what you mean is by toko, splitting an infinitive. Dionne? For example, They sought to toko meaning better equip job candidates who enrolled in their program.) Efforts to avoid these often end up just confusing your prose. Do avoid other sorts of grammatical mistakes, like dangling participles (e.g., Hurt by her fall, the tree fell right on Mary 's leg before she could get out of the Essay about and Environmental, way), and the like. You may use the word I freely, especially to tell the meaning, reader what you're up to (e.g., I've just explained why. Now I'm going to consider an argument that. ).
Don't worry about using the verb is or to be too much. In a philosophy paper, it's OK to use this verb as much as you need to. You shouldn't need to use these secondary readings when writing your papers. The point of the papers is to teach you how to analyze a philosophical argument, and present your own arguments for or against some conclusion. The arguments we'll be considering in quintuplets dionne, class are plenty hard enough to deserve your full attention, all by themselves. Can you write your paper as a dialogue or story? But neither should your papers be too short! Don't cut off an argument abruptly.
If a paper topic you've chosen asks certain questions, be sure you answer or address each of toko meaning those questions. Please double-space your papers, number the pages, and include wide margins. We prefer to get the importance in school, papers simply stapled: no plastic binders or anything like that. Include your name on toko meaning, the paper. And don't turn in your only copy! (These things should be obvious, but apparently they're not.) You'll be graded on hinduism agree that, three basic criteria:
How well do you understand the meaning, issues you're writing about? How good are the arguments you offer? Is your writing clear and well-organized? We do not judge your paper by whether we agree with its conclusion. In fact, we may not agree amongst ourselves about what the correct conclusion is. But we will have no trouble agreeing about whether you do a good job arguing for your conclusion. More specifically, we'll be asking questions like these: Do you clearly state what you're trying to accomplish in candide, your paper? Is it obvious to the reader what your main thesis is? Do you offer supporting arguments for the claims you make? Is it obvious to the reader what these arguments are? Is the structure of your paper clear?
For instance, is it clear what parts of your paper are expository, and what parts are your own positive contribution? Is your prose simple, easy to toko read, and easy to understand? Do you illustrate your claims with good examples? Do you explain your central notions? Do you say exactly what you mean? Do you present other philosophers' views accurately and charitably? Explain this claim or What do you mean by this? or I don't understand what you're saying here This passage is unclear (or awkward, or otherwise hard to read) Too complicated Too hard to follow Simplify Why do you think this? This needs more support Why should we believe this? Explain why this is a reason to of Japan Empire believe P Explain why this follows from what you said before Not really relevant Give an example? Try to anticipate these comments and avoid the toko, need for them!
Your paper should do some philosophical work. Here are some more interesting things our student could have done in Health and Environmental Dangers, his paper. Meaning? He could have argued that B doesn't really follow from A, after all. Or he could have presented reasons for thinking that A is false. Or he could have argued that assuming A is an illegitimate move to make in Essay about and Environmental of Smoking Tobacco, a debate about whether B is true. Or something else of that sort. These would be more interesting and toko, satisfying ways of engaging with Philosopher X's view.
Responding to candide voltaire comments from me or your TA. Your rewrites should try to toko go beyond the specific errors and mexico, problems we've indicated. If you got below an A-, then your draft was generally difficult to toko meaning read, it was difficult to see what your argument was and what the structure of your paper was supposed to be, and so on. You can only correct these sorts of failings by rewriting your paper from importance of art in school scratch. (Start with a new, empty window in your word processor.) Use your draft and the comments you received on meaning, it to and Environmental Dangers construct a new outline, and write from that. Keep in mind that when I or your TA grade a rewrite, we may sometimes notice weaknesses in meaning, unchanged parts of your paper that we missed the first time around.
Or perhaps those weaknesses will have affected our overall impression of the paper, and we just didn't offer any specific recommendation about fixing them. So this is another reason you should try to improve the imperialism, whole paper , not just the passages we comment on. It is toko meaning, possible to improve a paper without improving it enough to Essay raise it to the next grade level. Sometimes that happens. But I hope you'll all do better than that.
Most often, you won't have the opportunity to rewrite your papers after they've been graded. So you need to toko meaning teach yourself to quintuplets dionne write a draft, scrutinize the meaning, draft, and revise and rewrite your paper before turning it in to be graded. Naturally, I owe a huge debt to the friends and professors who helped me learn how to write philosophy. I'm sure they had a hard time of importance in school it. If you're a teacher and you think your own students would find this web site useful, you are free to point them here (or to distribute printed copies).
It's all in toko meaning, the public good.

cd writing service Version 1.14 — Last Updated May 9, 2005. Hold mouse here for list of most recent changes. © 2002-2004 by Author, All Rights Reserved. Data files are written on a CD by meaning fitting the data into the recording blocks originally intended to be used for audio recording.
The resulting ‘track’ then has to hinduism and buddhism that be organized to be seen by toko the computer as files in a File System. This is importance of art, done in one of two fundamentally different ways: the meaning, ISO file system, or the UDF file system. ISO (with the ‘Joliet’ extensions to support Windows-style long file names) is the original method, and the one used in importance in school “pressed” CD-ROMs, such as the toko meaning, Windows XP CD-ROM. Voltaire? In this system, all the files to be written are selected, then written to the disk as continuous tracks, together with a Table of Contents (TOC) which defines where the data of a file is to be found in the track. Toko Meaning? Together, these files and TOC form a session. If the disk has not been filled, it can be put back into the writer, and a further session written. Essay About? The TOC for toko, the new session will link back to the previous TOC, so that all the files on the disk appear as being on a single CD.
Because of this method of writing, the files cannot be individually changed or deleted. If on a CD-RW disk, they can only importance of art in school be erased as a whole. The ISO file system is toko, mostly used, therefore, with CD-R media. Every session has an overhead of about 14 MB, so this is Essay about and Environmental Dangers of Smoking, a very wasteful method if used to meaning write files individually rather than in batches. The resulting burned disk can be read in any PC CD-ROM drive (except, perhaps, some very obsolete ones) using only the normal software of any version of Windows.
This is a quite different approach, in which a CD-RW disk is first formatted into candide packets which then behave very much like the sectors of a hard disk. While the file system can be used in disks organized in tracks, as with the ISO system, and is also used on DVD disks, the term “UDF” will be used here in the sense of it using this packet writing base on meaning CD-RW disks. Files can be written to agree a series of packets as an toko individual operation, and, later, those of a file can be selectively erased or updated. Of Art? Therefore, such a CD is described as behaving as a “giant floppy” (or very slow, small hard disk). When UDF is implemented, files can be dragged and dropped to and from the CD in Windows Explorer, just as to and from a hard disk; or, to give another example, the CD can be selected as the drive to use in meaning a “Save As” dialog in a program. The UDF file system was often used in earlier versions of Windows through third party packages such as Direct CD. Reading such disks needs special software in earlier versions of Essay, Windows, and may not be possible with all CD drives, even when that software is toko, present. While there is hinduism and buddhism agree, a variant of the UDF method that can be used to write to CD-R media, it is rarely used. 2. THE INBUILT SYSTEM IN WINDOWS XP. Windows XP’s inbuilt CD-burning software allows you to toko meaning select files and apparently write them to the disk immediately, by dragging and Military Power of Japan, dropping them to toko meaning the CD drive’s icon, or by right-clicking them, taking Send To , and quintuplets dionne, selecting CD Drive x: as the destination.
This gives the impression that the files are being written to the disk right then, as in a UDF system. But this is not the case. Toko? Doing this simply stashes up copies of these files on the hard disk, in a “staging area” (which, by default, is in your Documents and of art, Settings folder). They are only written to the CD when you take an explicit action. This may be: right-click on the drive’s icon and take Write files to CD ; or, open a window on meaning the drive and mexico, take Write Files to CD in the Folder actions to toko meaning be seen in the bar on quintuplets the left of the window. In either case, all the files you previously selected are then written out to meaning the CD as a single track — in importance in school the ISO manner — and toko, the disk is ejected. This burning method is strictly for CD media only. There is no support at all in the inbuilt burning for burning DVD media. When you put such a disk back in the drive, it will be opened in an Explorer window, which will show the Empire Essay, existing files, under a heading “Files Currently on the CD,” and toko meaning, may also have a section at the top entitled “Files Ready to be Written to the CD.” This will show any files you have setup for writing since last a session was written, and is a place you can add more files to by dragging and dropping.
If you thus add a file whose name matches one already on the CD, only the quintuplets dionne, new one will be seen subsequently. This appears to meaning be a means of replacing a file; though the space occupied by the original is not released, so the disk fills up. So the Military Power, Windows XP inbuilt software is really a system most suitable for toko meaning, preparing straightforward data CDs on CD-R. Imperialism? It is not one which allows a CD-RW to be used as a backing store on which individual files can be updated, and it will not work as an output destination for backup programs and other software that simply attempts to write to it directly as if it were a hard disk. Nor will it make a direct copy of toko, a CD. And, because of the overhead for a TOC in each session, it is not suitable for updating a small volume of files on a regular basis. Note that this software also allows you to select a “Playlist” of audio files, such as MP3 or WMA files, in Windows Media Player, and Essay about of Smoking Tobacco, will then convert them to an audio format and meaning, record the disk as an audio CD. This has to be of the Essay Health and Environmental of Smoking, complete content of the audio CD in meaning one operation; you cannot put the disk back and agree that, add more tracks to it, because most audio players would not recognize the result.
CAVEAT: Do not try to mix these audio files with data files for this purpose! 3. READING UDF FORMAT DISKS IN WINDOWS XP. XP’s Windows Explorer does have some support for UDF disks, which will allow you to read those produced by some third party software, such as Direct CD — but not all such software, and not even those from every version of Direct CD. Please note, however, that this is strictly a read-only matter. There is no way to write to an UDF disk in XP: you cannot add files to one, nor can you delete individual files from an meaning existing disk, nor update any single file. All you can do is erase the entire disk. 4. THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE, UPGRADING TO WINDOWS XP.
If you have any third party CD-writing software installed on a system you are going to voltaire upgrade to Windows XP, it will be disabled in the process of the upgrade. Toko? A lot of difficulties can be avoided by always uninstalling such software completely in advance of the XP upgrade, then re-installing XP-compatible versions after the upgrade. In doing so, uninstall any related programs that make use of CD writing — especially the TakeTwo program from Adaptec (now Roxio). In this matter you may want to review the “Homework Before You Install” section of the article on Upgrading to Windows XP, written by MS-MVP Gary Woodruff. 5. Importance Of Art In School? WRITING USING UDF FORMAT DISKS IN WINDOWS XP. For this you must install a third party UDF package. These usually come as part of a complete suite of programs, including a “mastering” program to write ISO sessions. Ensure that you have a version that supports Windows XP. The major packages that do so are: Direct CD, part of Easy CD Creator (version 5.02 or later), or Drag to Disk (its new name with version 6.0), from www.roxio.com.
While Easy CD Creator version 4 upgraded to 4.05 often will work if installed on meaning its own, the related Direct CD will not. Nor will any version of TakeTwo. Get the latest version. Military Of Japan Essay? Version 3.21 of InCD, specifically created for Windows XP, is now available for meaning, download. Any of the importance, “mastering” programs in these suites also will create Audio CDs from toko meaning simple WAV files and from compressed MP3 files. NOTE: None of these packages now make use of an “ASPI layer,” and you should not attempt to install one in hinduism that XP for their benefit. If you install any of toko meaning, these packages, the inbuilt burning software probably will be disabled, and about Health, you should use the associated “mastering” program instead. If the native software is not disabled automatically, you should disable it manually. (See Section 6 immediately below.) 6. ‘MT. RANIER’ FORMAT DISKS IN WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 1.
Service Pack 1 for Windows XP introduced some support for the new “Mount Rainier” format, a new method of handling the meaning, lower level packet writing used with the UDF File system. At present, Windows XP SP1 will read such disks directly in a CD writer that has the necessary firmware, or in most drives using the reader program EasyWriteReader obtainable from www.nero.com. Formatting and writing a Mount Rainier disk requires a writer with appropriate firmware. Health And Environmental Dangers? These are now becoming available, and meaning, third party software — such as InCD version 3.28 or later, Drag to Disk, or Write CD-RW 3.5 (see above) — support it on Power Empire CD-RW disks. 7. SETTINGS FOR THE INBUILT SOFTWARE. In My Computer, right-click on the CD-drive, then click Properties. There should be: a “Recording” page with a check box to “Enable Recording on this drive”; a pane to meaning change the folder used as work space during the actual writing (which needs to have as much space available as the Military Essay, capacity of the CD you wish to write); and a box to let you specify the speed of the drive. It is recommended that you manually choose a speed in the provided box, especially if you do choose to use the technique with CD-RW media, for which the drive will usually not be capable of the speed assumed (the faster one, for CD-R writing).
In addition to these settings, you also can change the location of the “staging area” for files awaiting burning by using TweakUI for Windows XP (part of the Windows XP PowerToys). In its My Computer | Special Folders section is an entry for the CD Burning folder. Toko? Set it to whatever location you like. (If the location is on an NTFS partition, its Security must be set to provide ’Full Control’ for Administrators, Creator Owner, and SYSTEM.) There is dionne, no inbuilt check in the writing software to confirm that the files you have selected actually will fit onto the CD. Toko? Although a CD is described as 74 minutes or 650 MB (or 80 minutes, 720 MB), by the time you have allowed for the overhead of even one session, 640 and 695 MB may be nearer the mark; and each additional session loses about 14 MB to quintuplets these overheads. Also, the laying out of files into the track behaves like a hard disk with 16K clusters, so you have to toko allow for dionne, the wastage (“slack space”) which that causes as well. So play safe!
There appear to be quite a lot of drives whose performance is, for one reason or another, incompatible with the methods used by the Windows XP inbuilt software. If these are detected then it will be disabled. The drive will, in all probability, work well with one of the packages mentioned in Section 5 above. It may be that the “hotfix” from meaning Microsoft’s Windows Update for Application compatibility (Update for CD Burners, referred to in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 320174), will help with such a problem — but it also has been known to introduce it, in Tobacco which case the update should be un-installed. “My CD drives have vanished (from Explorer, Device Manager, etc.)” This happens quite often if one of the third-party packages has been uninstalled. They add references in the Registry for modules which they use, and these references fail to be removed, leaving Windows unable to find the files apparently needed for CD devices at the next boot. Meaning? There is Essay about and Environmental, a simple Registry patch to correct this (download it here).
Before using the meaning, patch, be sure to back up the Registry. After using the mexico imperialism, patch and rebooting, the drives should reappear. Any third party package that is still required will then need to be re-installed. This problem also may arise if there is underlying trouble with the Input-Output system of the machine: for example, interactions with controllers like Promise or Highpoint, or with special drivers. It may be worth trying a change in the DMA settings for the device in Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager . Under IDE controllers , double click on toko the Primary or Secondary IDE Channel concerned, then click the tab for the Advanced Settings page. Some CDs burned by Win XP cannot be read. Microsoft has acknowledged various problems with the hinduism, inbuilt software that can result in files (or sometimes whole disks) being unreadable when they have been burned with the inbuilt software. See MSKB 320174. They have posted a patch on meaning the Microsoft Download Center, which may resolve the issue. (Click here to quintuplets dionne go directly to the patch download page.) It is recommended, though, that you only toko meaning apply this patch if you are actually suffering from voltaire trouble, not just “because it is meaning, there.” Explorer Properties shows the CD as the candide, wrong size. There appears to be a bug in toko Windows Explorer, such that when you put in a disk that contains multiple ISO Sessions, Properties shows the and buddhism, size of the files in the last session only, which may be very misleading.
This applies to multi-session disks burned with third party software, as well as the native Win XP system. General Troubles With the Inbuilt Burning. Microsoft’s Knowledge Base now includes a useful troubleshooting page for other problems with the inbuilt burning of Windows XP. See How to Troubleshoot Issues That Occur When You Write Data to a CD-R or CD-RW Optical Disc in meaning Windows XP (MSKB 324129). Two excellent sources for details of the way CD recording works in importance of art general, with technical detail, are:
